Municipal Election 2026

Elections for municipal government are held every four years on the fourth Monday of October. The length of term for municipal elected officials is four years. The current term started in 2022 and ends in 2026.

In municipal elections in Ontario, unlike other levels of government, candidates are not elected to represent a political party.
The next municipal election will be held Monday, October 26, 2026.

Notice of Nominations for Office

Beginning May 1, 2026, nominations may be filed for the offices of:

  • Mayor (1 position)
  • Councillor (4 positions) 
  • School Board Trustee, English Language Public (1 position)
  • School Board Trustee, French Language Public (1 position)*
  • School Board Trustee, English Language Separate (1 position)*
  • School Board Trustee, French Language Separate (1 position)*

(* shared with other municipalities)

The Term of Office is from November 15, 2026, until the end of November 14, 2030. To run for the position of Mayor or Council you must be:

• A Canadian citizen

• At least 18 years of age

• Reside in the Municipality of Wawa, or be an owner or tenant of land in the Municipality of Wawa or the spouse of such a person

• Not prohibited from voting under any law

Nomination forms may be filed by candidates beginning Friday, May 1st, 2026, up until 2:00 p.m. on Nomination Day (August 21, 2026) by appointment only. Nomination appointments may be made with the Clerk’s Office by emailing moneill@wawa.cc or calling 705-856-2244 ex 223 and scheduled for when the Municipal Office is open (Monday to Friday) including on Nomination Day on Friday, August 21, 2026, between 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The filing fee for Mayor is $200.00, and for all other positions is $100.00. The fee must be paid by cash, debit, certified cheque, or money order. Candidates must not spend or raise funds for their election campaign until their nomination form has been filed. Credit card payments are not accepted.

The Nomination Paper (Form 1) must be signed by the candidate and must be filed in person, or by an agent, with the Wawa Clerk or designate. If an agent files the nomination form, it must be accompanied by a piece of Government Photo and identification with an address, along with the signature of the candidate prior to filing with the Clerk or designated Election Official.

In the event there are insufficient number of certified candidates to fill all positions available, nominations will be reopened for the vacant positions only on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Reminder to Candidates

• Candidates cannot be nominated for more than one office.

• Do not accept donations or spend any funds on a campaign until such time as you have filed the required Nomination Papers with the Clerk.

• You are responsible for keeping records of the financial activities related to your campaign. Remember to issue receipts for all donations, including donations of goods or services; obtain receipts for expenses incurred; keep copies of all receipts.

• Keep receipts for all expenditures and a record of the value of all contributions which are not money (i.e. signs, paper, advertising).

• It is the responsibility of the candidate to file a complete and accurate financial statement on time.

School Board Trustees (information available at time of posting)

Candidates filing nominations for the English School (Public or Separate) Board  trustee positions must file with the Wawa Clerk/Election Official. For the French School (Public or Separate) Board Trustee positions, candidates may do so at the following locations:

•     Conseil scolaire public du Grand Nord de l’Ontario – Township of Dubreuilville

•     Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario – Township of Chapleau
