Municipality of Wawa Welcomes Release of Net Zero Action Pathway Report

The Municipality of Wawa is pleased to announce the release of the Net Zero Action Pathway Report, developed by QUEST Canada through a collaborative community engagement and planning process.

The report outlines a community-driven pathway toward a more sustainable, resilient, and energy-secure future for Wawa. It reflects the priorities, ideas, and aspirations shared by residents, businesses, community organizations, and partners during a public visioning session held in June 2025.

Wawa's project was part of QUEST Canada's broader Motivating Net Zero Action in Rural, Remote and Indigenous Communities (MNZA) initiative, which supported communities across Canada in developing locally driven pathways toward a more sustainable future.

The process included extensive community engagement and the development of a Community Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory and Net-Zero Modelling Baseline, providing valuable data to support future municipal planning and decision-making. The report identifies opportunities to:

  • Strengthen local energy systems
  • Improve energy efficiency
  • Build community partnerships
  • Support local decision-making
  • Enhance community resilience
  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions

The Municipality extends its sincere appreciation to all residents, organizations, businesses, and community partners who participated in the visioning process and helped shape the report's recommendations.

The Municipality of Wawa is committed to protecting our environment and keeping hazardous materials out of our landfill, waterways, and natural areas. Each year, the Municipality hosts a Household Hazardous Waste Day to provide residents with a safe and environmentally responsible way to dispose of household hazardous waste. The event is typically held in September and is available to Wawa residents free of charge.

Why Proper Disposal Matters

Many common household products contain chemicals that can be harmful to people, wildlife, and the environment if disposed of improperly. Hazardous materials should never be placed in regular household garbage, poured down drains, or discarded on private property. By participating in Household Hazardous Waste Day, residents help reduce environmental contamination and support a cleaner, healthier community.

Common Items Accepted

Accepted materials may include:

  • Paints, stains, varnishes, and paint thinners
  • Household cleaners and solvents
  • Automotive fluids, motor oil, antifreeze, and fuel products
  • Batteries (single-use and rechargeable)
  • Propane cylinders and aerosol containers
  • Fluorescent bulbs and tubes
  • Pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers
  • Pharmaceuticals and sharps (properly contained)
  • Adhesives, glues, and other household chemicals

Please keep products in their original containers whenever possible and ensure lids are securely fastened.

The Municipality of Wawa regularly evaluates opportunities to improve energy efficiency within municipal operations and infrastructure.

Past and ongoing efforts may include:

  • Facility energy audits and assessments
  • Building upgrades and retrofits
  • LED lighting conversions
  • Equipment modernization
  • Energy monitoring and reporting
  • Operational improvements to reduce energy consumption

These initiatives help reduce municipal operating costs while supporting environmental objectives.

Municipal Energy Plan

The  Municipality  of  Wawa,  with  financial support  from  the  Ministry  of  Energy  and  assistance  from  the  Wawa  Economic Development Corporation and Algoma Power Inc., completed the Wawa Energy Plan in 2016.

The  Wawa  Energy  Plan  has  helped  Wawa  to  assess  the  community’s  energy  use  and greenhouse  gas  (GHG)  emissions;  identify  opportunities  to  conserve,  improve energy efficiency and reduce GHG emissions; consider impact of future growth and options for local clean energy generation; and support local economic development.

The  Municipality  of  Wawa  believed  that  the  development  of  a  community  energy plan  would assist  in  exploring  energy-related  opportunities  and  challenges  while identifying ways that local residents and businesses could manage their future energy use.

Wawa Green Project

The Wawa Green Project was the beginning of the implementation of the Wawa Energy Plan, a community-focused initiative aimed at promoting environmental stewardship, sustainability awareness, and practical actions to reduce environmental impacts. The project encouraged collaboration between residents, organizations, businesses, and community partners while fostering a culture of sustainability within the community.

LED Streetlight Conversion Program

The Municipality completed a conversion of municipal streetlights to energy-efficient LED technology. This initiative improved lighting quality throughout the community while reducing electricity consumption, lowering maintenance requirements, and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions associated with municipal operations.

Key benefits included:

  • Reduced energy consumption
  • Lower operating and maintenance costs
  • Improved lighting reliability and visibility
  • Reduced environmental impact

Arena and Recreation Facility Upgrades

The Municipality has implemented energy efficiency improvements at municipal recreation facilities, including the Michipicoten Memorial Community Centre and arena facilities. These upgrades have helped reduce energy consumption, improve operational efficiency, and enhance comfort for facility users.

Projects have included improvements to building systems, lighting, mechanical equipment, and facility infrastructure designed to support long-term sustainability and cost savings.

These investments demonstrate the Municipality's ongoing commitment to maintaining high-quality community facilities while reducing energy use and operating costs.

Solar Retrofit Projects

The Municipality of Wawa has explored and implemented solar energy opportunities as part of its commitment to sustainability, energy conservation, and responsible infrastructure investment. Solar retrofit projects have been undertaken on select municipal facilities to generate clean, renewable energy while reducing reliance on conventional energy sources.

These projects help lower greenhouse gas emissions, improve long-term energy resilience, and contribute to reducing municipal operating costs. By incorporating renewable energy technologies into municipal infrastructure, Wawa is demonstrating leadership in environmental stewardship and supporting a more sustainable future for the community.

The Municipality continues to evaluate opportunities for renewable energy projects and emerging technologies that align with community needs, environmental objectives, and long-term financial sustainability.
