Department Spotlights

The Mayor and Council of the Municipality of Wawa serve as the elected representatives and decision-makers responsible for setting the vision, priorities, and policies that guide the community forward. Committed to representing the interests of residents, Council works collaboratively to make informed decisions on matters such as municipal services, infrastructure, economic development, and community well-being. The Mayor acts as the head of Council, providing leadership and representing Wawa at official functions and regional meetings. Together, the Mayor and Council ensure local governance remains transparent, accountable, and responsive to the needs of the community, shaping a strong, sustainable future for Wawa.

The Chief Building Official, By-Law Officer, and Planning Department play a key role in ensuring that development in the Municipality of Wawa is safe, compliant, and aligned with our community’s long-term vision. The Chief Building Official is responsible for enforcing the Ontario Building Code, reviewing permit applications, and conducting inspections to ensure construction meets safety standards. The By-Law Officer upholds local by-laws that help maintain order, cleanliness, and quality of life throughout the municipality. Meanwhile, Planning Services guide land use and development through the administration of zoning by-laws, the Official Plan, and site plan approvals, ensuring that growth is well-managed and reflects the needs of our community. Together, these roles support responsible development and help shape a safe, livable, and forward-thinking Wawa.

The Corporate Services Department is the administrative backbone of the Municipality of Wawa, providing essential support to both Council and all municipal departments. This team is responsible for a wide range of functions, including records management, legislative services, communications, and customer service. They ensure the smooth operation of municipal governance by preparing agendas and minutes, managing municipal elections, and maintaining transparency and accessibility in local decision-making. Corporate Services also plays a key role in public engagement, ensuring residents are informed and connected with their local government. Through efficient administration and responsive service, the department helps foster accountability, collaboration, and excellence across the organization.

The Finance Department of the Municipality of Wawa is responsible for managing the municipality’s financial health with transparency, accountability, and efficiency. This department oversees budgeting, financial reporting, taxation, utility billing, payroll, and the management of municipal assets. By preparing annual budgets and long-term financial plans, the Finance team ensures that resources are allocated responsibly to support essential services, infrastructure, and community priorities. They also work closely with residents and businesses on property taxes and payments, providing clear information and responsive service. Through sound financial stewardship, the Finance Department helps sustain a strong foundation for Wawa’s growth and long-term success.

The Community Services and Tourism Department plays a vital role in enhancing the quality of life in Wawa by delivering engaging recreational programs, maintaining community facilities, and promoting the municipality as a vibrant destination. This department is responsible for the operation of parks, trails, and recreation spaces, as well as organizing events and activities that foster community spirit and healthy living. On the tourism side, the team works to showcase Wawa’s natural beauty, cultural attractions, and unique experiences to visitors from near and far, supporting local businesses and driving economic growth. Whether it’s through community engagement or tourism development, this department is dedicated to creating a welcoming, active, and thriving Wawa for residents and visitors alike.

The Wawa Public Library is a cornerstone of the community, offering a welcoming and inclusive space for learning, connection, and personal growth. More than just a place to borrow books, the library provides access to technology, educational programs, cultural events, and resources for all ages. From early literacy initiatives and youth activities to research support and lifelong learning opportunities, the library plays a key role in fostering an informed and engaged community. With a commitment to inclusivity and accessibility, the Wawa Public Library supports the intellectual and cultural enrichment of residents while serving as a vital hub for information, creativity, and community connection.

The Wawa Volunteer Fire Department is a dedicated team of trained volunteers who play a vital role in protecting the safety and well-being of our community. Serving on the front lines of emergency response, the department is responsible for fire suppression, rescue operations, hazardous materials response, and public education on fire prevention and safety. These volunteers commit their time, skills, and courage to respond to emergencies day and night, often putting themselves at risk to protect others. In addition to emergency response, they actively engage in community events and safety initiatives, helping to build a safer, more resilient Wawa. Their dedication exemplifies the spirit of service and community pride that defines our municipality.

The Wawa Intergenerational Legacy Project is a meaningful community initiative led by the part-time Seniors Programming Coordinator in partnership with the Wawa Goose Seniors Club. Funded by the Province of Ontario, this project brings together seniors and youth to share stories, traditions, and experiences that celebrate Wawa’s history and strengthen community bonds. The Seniors Programming Coordinator plays a key role in planning and organizing activities and facilitating opportunities for intergenerational learning and connection. They work closely with community partners and volunteers to ensure programs are inclusive, engaging, and beneficial for all participants. Through their leadership, the Intergenerational Legacy Project helps preserve local heritage, reduce social isolation among seniors, and promote a stronger, more connected community for generations to come.

The Wawa Airport is a vital transportation hub that supports residents, businesses, and emergency services across the region. Our dedicated Airport Staff play an essential role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of the facility year-round. Their responsibilities include maintaining runways and equipment, performing regular safety inspections, assisting pilots and air carriers, coordinating fuel and maintenance services, and supporting medevac and emergency response operations. The team’s commitment to safety, professionalism, and high operational standards helps keep Wawa connected to surrounding communities and contributes to the region’s economic growth and accessibility.
