Wawa Drinking Water System Intake Pipe Rehabilitation Project

The Municipality of Wawa (Municipality) is undergoing a drinking water system rehabilitation project. The Municipality has determined that the existing raw water intake facilities, including intake pipe, have deteriorated with age and are in need of replacement. 

What Work is Being Completed?

The Municipality is replacing the raw water intake facilities, including intake pipe, in Wawa Lake as well as the isolation sluice gate valve in the low lift pumping station. A temporary raw water intake system will be installed to supply the Water Treatment Plant for the duration of construction. The new intake pipe will be constructed by slip lining the existing intake pipe via horizonal directional drilling (HDD). HDD equipment will be located on Ganley Street between Broadway Avenue and Toronto Avenue during construction.

What Can Residents Expect?

Residents can expect higher than normal traffic volumes and noise around Toronto Avenue and Ganley Street. The Municipality’s Boardwalk in the area has been redirected with the use of site security fencing. A gravel ramp has been established to allow pedestrians to pass over the temporary raw water intake system. Please be aware of workers and stay within the designated areas for pedestrians. 

There is in-water work associated with this project, that includes the use of heavy equipment on barges and floating infrastructure. Recreational users of Wawa Lake are prohibited to use the lake area between Gold Street and Ontario Street for a distance of 300m (1,000ft).
