VITAL STATISTICS

Marriage Licenses

The Office of the CAO/Clerk-Treasurer assists with and processes Marriage Licenses.  The Clerk also provides Marriage Services.

Marriage License application forms may be picked up at the Municipal Office or from the Ministry of Government Services Website www.gov.on.ca.

Requirements for Marriage License

The fees for the Marriage License and Marriage Ceremony are according to the Municipality Schedule of Fees. Cash, debit card or credit card payments are accepted.

Birth, Death and Marriage Certificates

The registration of births and deaths within the Municipality are the responsibility of the Vital Statistics section of the Municipal Office. However, the Municipality cannot issue certificates.

Certificates for Births, Deaths and Marriages are issued by the Office of the Registrar General. Application forms and the fee schedule are available at the Municipal Office, 40 Broadway Avenue, or from the Ministry of Government Website at www.gov.on.ca.

Cemetery

The Municipality of Wawa operates the Woodland Cemetery.

The Vital Statistics section of the Municipal Office also provides services for the sale of cemetery plots, burial services and monument installations.

 MARRIAGE LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

Who May Marry

Any person who is at least 18 years of age may marry. No person under 16 years of age may marry. Any persons who is 16 or 17 years of age may marry with the written consent of his/her parents or legal guardians. A special consent form is available from the Municipal Office.

A person who has been divorced or annulled will require:

  • If the marrage was dissolved in Canada, the original or court-certified copy of the final decree or certificate of divorce
  • If the marriage was dissolved outside of Canada, the authorization of the Minister of Consumer and Business Services. Authorization may be obtained from the Office of the Registrar General, P.O. Box 4600, 189 Red River Road, Thunder Bay, ON  P7B 6L8. Information may be obtained from the Municipality.

How One Marries

A marriage may be solemnized under the authority of a license or the publication of banns.

Marriage License

  • A marriage license may be obtained from the issuer of Marriage Licenses at the Municipal Office.
  • At least one party to the proposed marriage must apply in person. The application must be signed by both applicants.
  • The issuer requires identification in the form of a birth certificate, passport and other photo ID. If only one party is applying, he/she must bring proof of the other party.
  • A marriage license is valid for use anywhere in Ontario. The license expires three months after the date of issue.
  • There is a fee charged for a marriage license.
