General Trail Permit Information The Wawa area has an excellent trail system with over 800 km / 500 miles of groomed wilderness trails and many off–trail opportunities as well. • Snowmobiles are not allowed on Mission Road or Broadway Avenue except to cross at intersections only. • Speed limit is 20 km/hr (13 mi/hr) in town – 50 km/hr (32 mi/hr) maximum speed on trails. • Snowmobiles are not allowed on sidewalks, in parks, cemeteries, schoolyards or private properties. There are a few important rules and regulations that apply to snowmobiles in the Province of Ontario. They are as follows: - All snowmobilers must wear a helmet.
- All snowmobilers must have proof of insurance and ownership of their machine. Unlike Ontario’s separate insurance policies for snowmachines, machine insurance in some U.S. states is written as a rider on the owner’s house insurance policy. A photocopy of this policy or a letter from the owner’s insurance agent is sufficient. (Americans can buy snowmobile insurance in Ontario if they own property in this province.)
- All snowmobilers must have proof of ownership of their machine with them at all times
- A trail permit is required to ride the Trans Ontario Provincial System (T.O.P.S.) trails
Fines — $90.00 for not displaying permit — $200.00 – $1,000.00 max. (All permits are in Canadian Funds)
Trail permits are available at most motels as well as at the Michipicoten Memorial Community Centre, (705) 856-2244 ext. 260 or 1-800-367-9292 ext. 260.
